I write to solicit, in favour of my fourth son, Francis Knowles Porter, patronage to a candidacy that he may become a Candidate at the approaching competitive examinations for entering as Chinese Interpretership at Hong-Kong.
The accompanying Testimonials and recommendations will, I hope, satisfy you that if he succeeds in obtaining the position which he is desirous of, he is well-fitted to become a useful and respectable public servant.
Many more recommendations could easily have been procured, but as no testimonials are more effective than those which are given by personal friends, and are already appended, I did not think it necessary to put my friends to the trouble of writing them.
It is proper to state explicitly that my son's age is below the maximum limit fixed for competitors. He is, however, in his 20th year, which he will have completed on the 8th of next December; long before he could reach Hong Kong, supposing that he is allowed to proceed.
